Sometimes in my
efforts to try and keep up with television awards there are some that
occasionally slip under the radar. One such relatively recent group is the
Gotham Awards show. Prominent for giving awards in movies; last year. they have
expanded to television. In the last week of April they gave their nominations
for 2025.
As always there
are certain limitations. For one they are another in a small but growing group
of organizations that don’t divide awards by gender. (I actually am planning to
talk about that in a post sometime next week because there has been a recent development
that I’d like to add.) For another they deal almost entirely with dramas,
comedies and limited series that have debuted within the previous season and
therefore don’t have repetition. This make them similar to the Spirit Awards
and their recognition of television.
But even within
those narrow confines one can often find hints of how the Emmys might go down
the road. And considering that there actually more categories for TV than the
Spirits (that group remains focused as much on film) there is more room for
vision. And looking at the nominees this year we continue to expand on what the
Astras made clear for pundits just a few weeks earlier. So let’s look at the nominees:
BREAKTHROUGH
COMEDY SERIES
The Studio is
already a prime contender for Emmy nominations down the road and The English
Teacher has been in other awards shows. Fantasmas was shortlisted for a Peabody and lingers as a dark horse. It’s
highly unlikely that Ramy Youssef’s #1 Happy Family USA or Overcompensating
will contend.
BREAKTHROUGH
DRAMA SERIES
Two likely
contenders from two very different sources: CBS’s rebranding of Matlock and
HBO Max’s The Pitt will almost certainly be contending for major awards
down the road. Black Doves remains a dark horse for acting awards. Netflix’s
Forever is unlikely to contend though One Hundred Years of Solitude might
contend for Best international series.
BREAKTHROUGH
LIMITED SERIES
Adolescence and
Dying For Sex are almost certain to be among the major contenders in all
major awards in these categories. Say Nothing continues to reign as a
dark horse. I would love if Get Millie Black was a major contender but I
find it unlikely. Penelope was a contender early in the year; I find its
prospect have dimmed since then.
OUTSTANDING
LEAD PERFORMANCE IN A COMEDY SERIES
Ted Danson for A
Man on the Inside is the only nominee with a realistic chance though Julio
Torres may receive a writing nomination for Fantasmas. Benito Skinner is
unlikely to get anywhere for Overcompensating and neither is anyone from
North of North or Deli Boys, though we can’t rule out the former.
OUTSTANDING
LEAD PERFORMANCE IN A DRAMA
Sterling K. Brown
for Paradise and Noah Wyle for The Pitt are shoo-ins for Best
Actor nominees and Kathy Bates remains the frontrunner for Best Actress in a
Drama for Matlock. Aldis Hodge was nominated for Image Awards for Cross
but that probably won’t help him and I doubt anyone from Forever will
contender.
OUTSTANDING
LEAD PERFORMANCE IN A LIMITED SERIES.
Cristin Milioti
and Michelle Williams will almost certainly be fighting it out for Best Actress
in a Limited Series in a few months’ time; they already are at the Astras.
Stephen Graham is a front-runner for Adolescence and Bryan Tyree Henry’s
chances seem to be improving for The Dope Thief. Only Megan Stott for Penelope is a
long shot for a nomination.
OUTSTANDING
SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE IN A COMEDY SERIES
Here is an intriguing
group. Chase Sui Wonders was nominated by the Astras for The Studio last
week; this may improve her odds. I would love to see Timothy Simons contend for
Nobody Wants This or Sean Patton for English Teacher; both of
their performances were hysterical. Linda Lavin was nominated posthumously for Mid-Century
Modern and my opinions on Deli Boys remain unchanged.
OUTSTANDING
SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE IN A DRAMA
This is worthy
of note.. Skye P. Marshall has received multiple nominations for her work in Matlock
already and this would seem to solidify her spot as a contender. James
Marsden was already a front-runner for Paradise. Ben Whshaw has received
some nominations for Black Doves. I’m not sure of Katherine LaNasa will
be nominated for The Pitt but someone will. I don’t know about Dune Prophecy’s
chances but Olivia Williams is a hell of an actress.
OUTSTANDING
SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE IN A LIMITED SERIES
This gives fairly
scary insight. Owen Cooper and Erin Doherty are almost certain to be nominated
for Adolescence as is Jenny Slate for Dying for Sex. Diego Luna did
receive a couple of acting nominations for La Maquinna but I suspect
he has a better chance for Andor. Taraji P. Henson was nominated for a
couple of awards for Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist but I don’t
think that will be enough.
They also go
into Original Film and that might help. Three of the nominees in that category
are documentaries but Rebel Ridge and Bridget Jones: Mad About The
Boy probably will contend. As for performance in an original film, Renee
Zellweger has been nominated by the Astras for her work in Bridget Jones and
Aaron Pierre was nominated by the Astras for Rebel Ridge. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor
did receive a few acting nominations for The Supreme’s at Earl’s All You Can
Eat but she’s a long shot. Phoebe-Rae Taylor for Out of My Mind and
Dylan O’Brien for Caddo Lake have no realistic chance.
And to prove how
much I love Gotham without another thought Sheryl Lee Ralp and Amy
Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel will be receiving special awards from the
Gotham’s. We won’t call them lifetime achievement because both sets are very,
very active.
Honestly this is
a solid group of contenders for the sophomore year. It’s likely the most
correlation with the Emmys will come with Outstanding Limited Series, followed
by drama and then possibly comedy. Sight
unseen, I suspect there’s a good chance for some of their nominees for TV movie
to make it as well, both in fiction and documentary. And honestly, any group
with as eclectic set of nominees as Get Millie Black, Matlock and Deli
Boys is already going to be on my favorites list.
I’ll back in a
few weeks with the Dorian nominations followed by the TCA awards. Stay tuned.
