If anything, this category is even
tougher to handicap than Supporting Actor because the number of nominees seems
to be fluctuating. Last seasons winner, Uzo Aduba had competed in the comedy
category the previous season, and will probably get nominated again. But
bearing in mind that I have little experience with either 'Game of Thrones' or
'Orange is the New Black', I'll try
and deal with interim choices. Forgive me if I'm way off.
Christine Baranski, 'The Good Wife'
Diane was always one of the most
fascinating characters on this series, veering from leader to combatant to ally
and back. While one might have issues with her role in the finale, the fact
remains that she's gone nearly as unrewarded as Alan Cumming for her work on
this series. She may be back in an online spinoff next season, but let's assume
this will be her last shot for this show, and honor her.
Linda Cardellini, 'Bloodline'
There are a lot of possible
nominees from Netflix - 'Orange is the New Black' always has a few, and 'House
of Cards' opened up two more new characters. But watching the sole sister of
the Rayburn clan degenerate despite her apparent escape to New
York last season only to get dragged back in has been
the stuff of great acting. She's worked in a lot of great series, even been
nominated occasionally, but she's earned her spot here. Give her a chance/
Regina King, 'The Leftovers'
One of the great actresses of the
new golden age, she's almost certain to get another nomination for her superb
work in 'American Crime'. But her performance as the put upon mother who loses
who her daughter in the opening episode of the second season, struggles with
her husband and the rest of Miracle throughout the year, adding to one of the
great reveals when the series climaxed in the finale. She's already proven that
she's one of the great actresses of our time. It would be fitting for her to be
honored here.
Rhea Seehorn, 'Better Call Saul'
It's very hard to be a woman in a
Vince Gilligan series, especially when you're around such morally corrupt
people like Walter White and Jimmy McGill. Seehorn has managed to do a far
better job at fitting into the world in this series, trying to keep Jimmy on
the straight and narrow, while always being wooed more into the corrupt world.
And always being played by the men trying to outmaneuver ain't no picnic
either. Kim grew a great deal within Season 2 of this series. It would be
fitting if she got a nomination without having to take the abuse that comes
with it.
Maura Tierney, 'The Affair'
Having the more sympathetic role in
this often convoluted series is always difficult. But Tierney, one of the
better actresses in TV for going on two decades now managed to hit a level that
was always on the right note. (And honestly, if I had been married to her, I
would never have cheated on her.) The Golden Globe win would seem to indicate a
sure thing, but then again, Ruth Wilson won last time out and was shut out completely. I think Tierney
has a better chance.
Constance Zimmer, 'UnREAL'
Quinn is the ultimate summation of
an antiheroine. She is willing to throw anyone
- including contestants on her series, her staff, even her own lover -
under the bus, if it gets her higher ratings. There really should be no reason
on earth to like her -- except she's so
much fun. This is the
character that this great actress has been working towards her entire career,
and its already a role of a lifetime. Her triumph at the Critic's Choice seems
to indicate its only a matter of time before she's got a similar trophy in her
hand --- not that Quinn wants one, of course.
WILD CARD
Maggie Siff, 'Billions'
Considering that this series was dominated by
two powerful men, it says a lot that the most fascinating character on this
series was Wendy, the performance coach who spent the season trying to balance
her place between the two worlds, and ended the season by walking away from
both.. There have been a lot of interesting women roles this year, but hers was
one of the more intriguing, and considering how many good series she's been a
part of without being recognized, this would be a good time to pick her.
