Now, the comedies
BEST COMEDY SERIES
Considering that last January's
choice Master of None hasn't had a
chance to air any new episode, the immediate favorite would seem to be Silicon Valley , which won last July. Veep would be a good choice, particularly
considering an election season with a climate that resembles a documentary. If
the voters wanted to add a splash of color and relevance they would do well to
recognize Black-ish or Atlanta .
Of the group, my personal
preference is for black-ish, one of
the most hysterical and politically sound comedies on the air. Considering that
Jane the Virgin was inexplicably
ignored, I think it more likely that one of the HBO comedies will prevail
instead. So let's give the edge to Veep, which
inexplicably hasn't won from this group yet.
Should win: black-ish.
Will Win: Veep.
BEST ACTOR, COMEDY
Jeffrey Tambor should be the
favorite for his superb work on Transparent,
considering he has prevailed the last two years in this category. However,
unlike the Emmys, this organization has yet to give this prize three years
running, which may be an obstacle.
Personally, my preference is for
Anthony Anderson for black-ish. He's
proven himself to be one of the greatest actors in this medium, in drama or
comedy. And he has more than earned his place at the winner's table. So let's
hope they see light.
Should Win/Will Win: Anderson .
BEST ACTRESS, COMEDY
Where the hell are Gina Rodriguez,
Amy Schumer or Rachel Bloom? They deserve to be nominated at least. OK, that's
out of my system.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus should be the
favorite: considering that she's won two prizes from this group as well. But
since this organization has a habit of giving awards out of left field, why not
someone different? Tracee Ellis Ross would be my personal preference, but I'd
settle for Constance Wu, whose tart performance on Fresh off the Boat is one of TV's hidden gems.
Should win: Ross/Wu.
Will Win: Louis-Dreyfus.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY
Andre Braugher has prevailed twice
in the last three contests, and I've no problem with him winning again, but the
guy hasn't shown up to pick up his previous two trophies, so how about we
recognize someone whose definitely going
to be there. T.J. Miller was an incredible host at the awards in January, and
gave a hysterical speech when he won at the ceremony in July. One can only
wonder what he'd say if he won while hosting. I'd kind of like to see Tony Hale
for Veep win, considering how much
fun he is to watch at the Emmys, but Miller's work on Silicon Valley has always been a real gem of a
performance.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY
I'm a little shocked that Mayim
Bialik hasn't been nominated considering her two previous wins for The Big Bang Theory have featured good
speeches. Allison Janney would appear to be the prohibitive favorite again, but
considering that she didn't win the Emmy last year for Mom may indicate critics want to honor someone else.
I'd personally like to see Jane
Krakowski win a TV award for something, but I think its more likely to go to another
veteran actress: Judith Light for her superb performance as Shelly on Transparent. However, considering this is a category that is known for ties,
there's a real chance both could prevail.
Should Win: Krakowski.
Will Win: Light,
BEST GUEST PERFORMER IN A COMEDY
I think this one is Saturday Night
Live's to lose. My personal preference would be Larry David's Bernie Sanders
over Alec Baldwin's Donald Trump. Let's be honest, David's speech would be a
lot funnier, assuming Baldwin 's shows up at all.
