Now, let's look at some of the
other categories, focusing mainly on movies/limited series.
BEST TV MOVIE/LIMITED SERIES
Really hard, picking and choosing
among thee fine selections. People V.
O.J. Simpson is probably the favorite in this category, but it did happen
at the beginning of the year. The Emmys remembered it, but its still going to
be a hard pick. Admittedly, All The Way or
The Night Manager could manage to
pull an upset (I have a slight preference for the latter) but People was such a good event, and is as
pertinent as any of the others, that I can't really argue with it winning.
Should Win: Night Manager
Will Win: The People V. O.J.
Simpson.
BEST ACTOR IN A TV MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES
Considering how brilliant Courtney
B. Vance was as Johnnie Cochran in O.J.
Simpson, and that he won the Emmy earlier this year, this should be a slam
dunk. But this is one of those shows where the winner doesn't necessarily gel
with the previous winner. Bryan Cranston could easily pull out a victory, and
it's likely Tom Hiddleston could as well. Still, I think in the end, Vance will
win by a hair.
Should Win/Will Win: Vance.
BEST ACTRESS IN A TV MOVIE OR
LIMITED SERIES
Oh, this is going to hurt. Now I
had no problem with Sarah Paulson taking the Emmy in this category for her work
as Marcia Clark, and I still wouldn't if she managed to repeat here. But there
are so many of the best performances of the year were in this category, and I
really wish there was a way to honor them. Could we give a trophy to Felicity
Huffman or Lili Taylor for American
Crime? And Olivia Colman deserved to win something since the first season of Broadchurch, couldn't she win here?
Out of this deserving bunch, my
personal preference is Taylor . But
really, if Paulson does repeat (and she's won a couple of times before) I'm not
going to be that upset.
Should Win: Taylor
Will Win: Paulson.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A TV MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES
An even tougher category than the
last bunch. Sterling K. Brown honestly should've gotten a nomination for This is Us to go with the one he got for
playing Christopher Darden. Should he win? Yes. Will he? Well, its a tough
group. Hugh Laurie's work in The Night
Manager deserves to win something. And Frank Langella's performance as Richard
Russell was one of the most astounding of the year. Travolta and Whitaker
deserve statues as well.
Oh, this one always gives me agita.
I'm going to give an edge to Laurie for a change, but really Brown deserves it.
Should Win: Brown.
Will Win: Laurie.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A TV MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES
Easiest one of the four. Though
Melisso Leo and Elizabeth Debicki both game astonishing performances this year,
the obvious choice is Regina King for her superb work on American Crime. She's earned
honors from this organization in the past; it was something of a shock when she
lost in this category in July. It'll be another nice bookend to go with the two
Emmys she deservedly won in this category.
MISC.
As always, I watch no reality
series, so I'm not going to try and handicap those. As for Best Talk Show, I
think it's likely to go to either The Daily Show or one of its alumni. My
personal preference would be for Samantha Bee, but really John Oliver's just as
good.
As for best animated series, this
is where they tend to go less traditional, and I'm going to go with Archer. It would be keeping with the
flavor of FX that they've been going with.
